The right environment for your guinea pig

If you want a pet, remember that they are living creatures, so pay a lot of attention on their needs. Because cats and dogs are very popular, you may hear a thing or two about their needs. On the other side, not so many people have guinea pigs as their pets. If you have or you are planning to have a guinea pig as your pet, you should know something about their need. The first and most important is a hutch. It has to be weatherproof and big. Also, you should raise it from the ground. Your guinea pig will be happier if you provide a big hutch. Place it out of direct sunlight and avoid garages.

Equally important are exercises for your guinea pig. They need a lot of physical activities. The best solution is to let them outside, on a grassy area. Don’t forget to protect them from predators such as cats, dogs and foxes. During cold days, you shouldn’t let them outside, so let them exercise indoors. Also, you can attach run to their hutch, so they can exercise when they want it. If a guinea pig doesn’t have enough exercise he can develop osteoporosis or obesity.

Guinea pigs are very sensitive to a high or very low temperatures. A heat stress may occur if a temperature gets over 27°C. If a weather is very hot, move the hutch in the shade. During winter, you should provide them extra bedding. Don’t forget that they need exercise during winter as well. Every material you use for the inside of the hutch should be dust-free. The bottom of a hutch, should be lined with shredded paper or wood shavings. That layer must be 2-5 cm deep.
