Choosing a small pet

Choosing a small pet

If you don’t like or you don’t want to have a cat or a dog as your pet, there are many alternatives. Because many people live in small apartments, small pets are the best choice. There are many different pets you can choose. All of them have pros and cons. It would be wise to know them before you bring a pet home.

•    Birds are some of the most popular house pets. They are colorful and they can make your home a happier place. Also, you will keep them in a cage, so they won’t make any mess in your home. A good side is that there are many birds that are bred for domestic purposes. However, there are many wild birds that cannot be kept at home (parrots and toucans). Many of them like companionship, so you will have to have two birds.

•    Hamsters are very interesting animals. They are small and friendly. They are independent and you don’t need to play with them, they can do it themselves. You don’t even need several of them. A hamster can live alone. There are some drawbacks with them. They are nocturnal animals, so you will hear a lot of sounds during the night. You must treat them well, or they will bite you.

•    Guinea pigs are the most social of all pet rodents. They live between 5 and 7 years (longer than hamsters). They won’t try to climb and get out of a cage, so you can keep them in open-topped pen. But, they require a lot of grooming because they have long hair. You must have two of them. Also, they carry certain diseases.
